Objective: The objective of the Career Achievement in Teaching Award is to recognize evidence of outstanding teaching performance over an extended period of time.
Eligibility: Tenured faculty member with a minimum of five years of service in Iowa State University's College of Human Sciences and a minimum of nine years of classroom in experience in higher education.
Amount of Award: $500
Number of Awards: One per year, although the College of Human Sciences Honors and Awards Committee reserves the right to not select any recipient in a given year.
Criteria: Selection is based on documented evidence, including student and peer evaluations, of outstanding classroom teaching performance, supplemented by evidence of instructional contributions outside the classroom.

- Nomination statement of no more than three pages, signed by an individual with a reputation for outstanding teaching, describing why this person deserves this award. The purpose of this statement is to persuade those reviewing the nomination that this candidate is deserving of the award. Cite specific examples of for each of the following:
- Range of teaching responsibilities that have been performed
- Aspects of the teaching performance which distinguish the nominee
- Specific evidence of meritorious performance
- An abbreviated version of the nominee's current curriculum vitae (no more than four pages) that includes all information related to the teaching award.
- Statement of teaching philosophy, prepared by the nominee (two pages).
- If relevant, include a list of current or former students with information about their current employment and/or related activities.
- Preface items 9 and 10 with a list of the names and positions of the letter writers and an indication of their relevance to the nomination.
- Include at least three statements from the nominee's colleagues who are in a position to comment on his or her teaching. Whenever possible, comments from colleagues should reflect team teaching experiences, observations, or other firsthand knowledge of the teaching performance. Ideally, these colleagues should have strong reputations for teaching excellence. Each statement should be in letter form on relevant letterhead and signed by the corresponding colleague.
- Include at least three letters from current and former students. If applicable, each statement should be in letter form on relevant letterhead and signed by the corresponding colleague.
- Student evaluation data. Student evaluation information should be displayed in summary form, including an appropriate range of courses or offerings and reflecting especially the most recent years. Student evaluations should be displayed in the context of college or department norms with a clear explanation of the characteristics being evaluated and the rating scale being used.
- Optional appendix. Any additional documentation of pedagogical innovation or scholarship, classroom performance, vita information, letters or testimonials may be added as an appendix. Nominees are not served well in the evaluation process by the submission of a large body of undigested material.
