Career Achievement in Teaching Award

Since Carol Fuhler joined the CHS faculty in 1999, she has been a prominent role model for students who are preparing for the teaching field. Student elected her as VEISHA Professor of the Year in 2000. They continue to rate Fuhler’s teaching among the best in the college.

As an associate professor in the department of curriculum and instruction, Fuhler helps student-teachers develop skills in interacting with their students, colleagues and administrators as she sparks appreciation for reading and the language arts.

The author of Teaching Reading with Multicultural Books Kids Love and Discovering Geography of North America with Books Kids Love, Fuhler has been invited to numerous conferences to discuss her approaches to learning, including the International Reading Association Conference and the Oxford Round Table at Harris Manchester College in the University of Oxford. Following her belief that as an educator she must “empower rather than to enable, to motivate rather than to numb, and to excite rather than stifle,” Fuhler continues to inspire her students and colleagues.

“Now that I am teaching my own students, I look back with even more gratitude than I did while in her courses,” said Amanda Carter, a former student of Fuhler’s. “She showed us ideas that I currently implement in my own classroom,” said Carter.

“Dr. Fuhler always modeled respect and encouragement, creating in me the awareness and desire to show that same consideration to my students,” stated another former student, Marissa Vermeer.

This award was presented during the winter social for faculty and staff on Thursday, Dec 6.
