Carol CordellAcademic Advisor Kinesiology
Outstanding Advisor Award
With a helpful smile, Carol Cordell helps make the Department of Kinesiology feel more like a family than an institution to its 800 students. At any given time, she knows more than 300 students by name and guides them through academic hurdles and administrative matters. Cordell has received a number of awards that recognize her outstanding work as an academic advisor. One student wrote that she is “a totally reliable anchor [for students] in their often stressful transitions in higher education.” She puts in long hours, working to the highest degree of perfection to help students succeed. She co-teaches an introductory class that explores sub-disciplines and careers in kinesiology. She also coordinates the Kinesiology and Health Learning Community for first-year students. Cordell collaborates with Greg Welk to fold a number of service learning projects into these programs which combine academics, social networking, and interaction with kinesiology faculty. “By showing honest concern, making appropriate referrals and working through the decision making process with a student, we connect with our students on a personal level. We can and do make a difference,” wrote Cordell in about her advising philosophy. This award was presented during the winter social for faculty and staff on Thursday, Dec 6. |
