Faculty Award in International Achievement Award
Emily Moore's research in global health examines the impact of HIV and AIDS on the lives of people living in communities around the world. She focuses her work on ways to prevent the virus from spreading. Moore has studied the reach of the virus and its effects on men, women and children living in both urban and rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa, Hong Kong, China, and cities in North America. In the early 1990s, before Moore came to Iowa State, she began to define her work through a comparative study of Africans and African Americans. She explored the similarities and differences in the approaches that these two groups took to HIV/AIDS as a problem in their respective communities and asked the question: Who could or would come forward to take leadership roles in developing strategies to prevent the virus? Two current studies that Moore is undertaking seek to identify cultural beliefs and behaviors that influence the transmission of HIV, so that culturally appropriate health education interventions can be developed to slow the spread of the virus. The Rev. Robin Dease of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Johns Island, South Carolina worked with Moore on a HIV/AIDS public policy project in the state. Dease described Moore as a true scholar because she looks to grass roots organizations and listens to real-life stories and testimonials from people whose lives have been changed by AIDS. Dease described Moore's accomplishments as taking her research in Africa, Asia and Europe and sharing it with African American grass roots leaders, particularly women religious leaders. She helps them develop preventive strategies to limit the spread of HIV/AIDS.
