Faculty Award for International Achievement

As one of the lead researchers in a global initiative dedicated to combating malnutrition in developing countries, Wendy White is working hard to improve people's lives around the world.

For the past seven years, White has served as a principal investigator for original research projects sponsored by the HarvestPlus Biofortification Program, which fights malnutrition by enhancing the micronutrient contents of key staple crops through plant breeding and/or biotechnology. White's research has established the potential feasibility of beta-carotene biofortification of cassava and maize, two key crops in sub-Saharan Africa, as a means to combat vitamin A deficiency, a leading contributor to childhood illnesses and deaths worldwide. Her research for HarvestPlus has resulted in 15 invited oral presentations in 12 countries and five publications in leading scientific journals.

White has also made significant contributions to research funded by the global food industry through a series of human studies funded by Unilever Research and Development in the Netherlands. Her work has drawn the attention of national and international media, including ABC Medical News Radio, CNN American Morning, National Public Radio and Radio New Zealand.

White is a true supporter of international research and education. Beyond her own successful research, she has been instrumental in creating international educational experiences for Iowa State University undergraduate students. White and Assistant Professor Lorraine Lanningham-Foster are working to establish teaching collaborations with the University of Hyogo in Japan. Among the early outcomes is a joint class project and joint live class involving dietetics students from the University of Hyogo and Iowa State University.

According to one nominator, "{Dr. White] is an intrepid traveler and for a most worthy cause … Her research is always exquisitely careful and published in the most highly-regarded journals in the field of nutrition … She is truly transforming lives, globally!"
