Bernhard Hennig
PhD Food and Nutrition 1982

This award recognizes outstanding community leadership as well as leadership in the (former) College of Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Association and the Iowa State University Alumni Association.

The University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture — under the leadership of Bernhard Hennig — received the largest National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant in the college's history in 2005. The $6.6 million dollar grant allows researchers to study the toxicity of environmental pollutants with a focus on how they affect nutrition, health and disease. The funding also supports the employment of more than 50 faculty, research scientists and students at the University of Kentucky. Hennig's management of this grant demonstrates his clear understanding and appreciation for the "big picture" in research and fund raising in addition to his effective monitoring of people and budgets.

In the classroom, Hennig's upbeat and lively personality engages students in the learning process. He makes it a point to include talented undergraduates in his research projects, and he usually has students working side by side with him in the lab. His success and enthusiasm for research are admirable and can be summarized by his impressive publication record of more than 150 refereed publications in journals of the highest quality. Hennig is not only a compassionate and caring person who is well liked by his colleagues and students, he is a visionary who has made remarkable scientific contributions to the discipline of nutritional sciences.
