Carol Van WaardhuizenHelen LeBaron Hilton RecognitionBy the College of Family and Consumer SciencesThis award recognizes outstanding community leadership as well as leadership in the (former) College of Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Association and the Iowa State University Alumni Association.
Carol Van Waardhuizen is an active and articulate advocate for the college, the university, and the well-being of individuals, families and communities. As dean and director of adult and community education at Iowa Central Community College, she has worked diligently to provide diverse educational opportunities for the part-time student population in a nine-county area. She initiated a day-long conference, “Women in the 90s,” to address contemporary women’s issues, and implemented an annual non-traditional career exploration conference for 6th-12th grade girls titled “Taking the Road Less Traveled,” which was subcontracted with ISU. An enthusiastic ambassador for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (CFCS), Van Waardhuizen served as president of the CFCS Alumni Association in 1994-95. She played a key role as the college established the Dean Helen LeBaron Hilton Chair and embarked on the fund-raising campaign for the Palmer Human Development and Family Studies Building. |
