As President of Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, Barbara Crittenden provides leadership in innovative use of technology in learning and teaching. As a member of Governor Tom Vilsack’s Strategic Planning Council, she will employ her futuristic thinking to create a statewide vision for 2010, and design a blueprint for realizing that vision.

Barb joined Southwestern as a nursing instructor in 1981 before enrolling in the masters program in curriculum and instructional technology at Iowa State. Only two years after earning her masters, she was named Vice President for Instruction at Southwestern, with responsibility for all credit programs. While Barb was Vice President, Southwestern was selected as a pilot school for the Department of Education accreditation process. She co-led her institution through the first-ever DE on-site review, as well as the NCA evaluation which led to a ten-year accreditation. She was named president of Southwestern in 1996.

Barb is a powerful role model for young men and women aspiring to careers in academic administration.
