- Sara Kadolph was the first ISU professor to receive the USDA Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching award.
- Joanne Olson (2005) and Michael Clough (2003) were nationally recognized as the Outstanding Science Teacher Educator of the Year by the Association for Science Teacher Education.
- D. Lee Alekel won the 2003 Mead Johnson award from the American Society for Nutritional Sciences.
- Ann Thompson received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Information Technology and Teacher Education.
- Mary Lynn Damhorst was named an International Textiles and Apparel Association Fellow.
- Marcia Harmon Rosenbusch received the Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
- Jerry Thomas received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.
- Peter Martin is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (2005).
- Design entries submitted by Jean Parsons and J. R. Campbell to the 2004 International Textile and Apparel Association exhibition won the top two design awards.
- Carol Fuhler wrote a chapter in "Young Adult Literature in the Classroom,” the book that received the Golden Lamp Award from the Association of Educational Publishing.
- John Schuh was named among the 18 individuals who shaped the profession of student housing in the 20th century by the Association of College and University Housing Officers- International.
- James Bloedel, Doug King, Rick Sharp and Jerry Thomas are Fellows of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
- Pamela J. White was named a 2004 Fellow of the American Oil Chemists’ Society.
- Gary D. Phye is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 15.
- Nancy Evans received the Outstanding Graduate Preparation Faculty Award from the American College Personnel Association.
- Daniel Robinson received the Gordon Lawrence Award from the International Association for Psychological Type.
- Ann Marie Fiore received the 2003 Emerald Publishing Literati Club Highly Commended Award.
- Mark Oleson was named Financial Counselor of the Year by the National Association for Financial Counseling Education.
- Flo Hamrick was named an Emerging Scholar by the American College Personnel Association.
- Distinguished Professor Diane F. Birt was named the 2003 spring University Presidential Lecturer by ISU President Gregory Geoffroy.
- Fulbright Scholar Meilin Yao, a professor from Beijing Normal University in China, chose to study at Iowa State with professor Gary Phye to further research on teaching for knowledge transfer.
Leading the nation and the world
- The ISU Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14, created by Virginia Molgaard, Karol Kumpfer and Elizabeth Fleming, funded by grants from the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the National Institute for Mental Health and directed by Richard Spoth at the Social and Behavioral Research Center for Rural Health, has been recognized by four federal agencies: National Institute on Drug Abuse, US Department of Education, US Department of Justice (OJJDP) and US Department of Health and Human Services (CSAP). The program is now being used nationally and internationally by the Pacific Health Organizations of the Americas (PAHO), Spain, and the United Kingdom.
- Iowa State’s Teacher Education program will be the first in the nation to prepare undergraduate teacher education students for virtual schooling, with support College of Human Sciences POINTS OF PRIDE from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in the US Department of Education.
- Extension’s interactive web site brings together the expertise of universities, governments, trade associations and the food industry to provide centralized, up-to-date, research based food safety information.
- The George Washington Carver Teacher Education program, a joint venture with Simpson College and Des Moines Area Community College, is increasing the state’s pool of well-qualified teachers of color. The program breaks new ground for public-private and 4- year and 2-year partnerships.
- The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Leadership Academy, our innovative way to offer graduate study through a series of intensive, week-long courses over the summer complemented by distance education components during the academic year, was the first of its kind in the nation.
- The College participates in The Great Plains IDEA (Interactive Distance Education Alliance), that won the American Distance Education Consortium’s greatest honor, the National Excellence in College and University Distance Education award.
- ISU Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) improves the health of Iowa families. A recent study of the cost and benefits of the program showed that for every dollar spent to deliver nutrition education in Iowa through EFNEP, $8.03 is saved in future health care costs. Each year 2,000 Iowa families benefit from this program. EFNEP is funded by USDACSREES.
- The Financial Counseling Clinic received the 2002 Center of the Year award from the Association for Financial Counselors Planning Educators.
- The Iowa State University Child Development Laboratory School is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children for its all-day, year-round programming for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten-age children.
- Sara Kadolph instituted the world’s first International Colour Congress, bringing Third World authorities on natural dyes to share their expertise with textiles professionals in industrialized nations.
Developing the best scholars
- Kevin Saunders’ work was honored as the Dissertation of the Year by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
- Seung-Eun Lee received the Outstanding Dissertation Paper Award from the International Textile and Apparel Association.
- The Food Product Development Team placed first in the NASA Food Technology Center’s annual Food Product Development contest with their space pizza entry.
- The Food Science Club was the regional champion two years in a row in the Food Science College Bowl sponsored by the Institute of Food Technologists
- The Cyclone Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America was named Club of the Year for 2003-04 at the world conference. ISU College of Human Sciences POINTS OF PRIDE
- While serving as the state president of the Iowa Chapter of the American Association for Family and Consumer Sciences, Betty Chamness Trost was elected to a national post—Vice President of Affiliates.
- Nanci Shaw has been invited to participate in the prestigious David L. Clark National Graduate Student Research Seminar in Educational Administration and Policy.
- Thirty graduate students from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, are studying at Iowa State to exchange practices in education and further cultural understanding.
- Jessica Stromer received a grant from the US Department of State to promote international understanding while student teaching.
- Three students served as chair of the pre-professional and graduate student section of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences: Jenny Stone, Beth Kassmeyer Richards, and Ana Conover.
- Ashley Drahn’s Butterfly won the first ever Paris American Academy Award for Excellence in Design in the International Textile and Apparel Association competition.
- Graduate students Liesel Hohenshell and Eun-Mi Yang were on the research team that received the Outstanding Paper Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching.
- Graduate student Maury Bousson was on the research team that won the Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching from the US Distance Learning Association, for computer animations that illustrate human anatomy in motion.
