Our work matters. People matter
“One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth the doing is what we do for others.”
— Lewis Carroll
Labor Day has come and gone and with it, first anniversary stories of Hurricane Katrina, national stories of election races heating up, and anticipatory stories of the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. It is time to take stock, not only of our classes and students, but of the college, our vision, and why we are here.
At our ribbon tying ceremony on July 1, 2005, we emphasized that the College of Human Sciences is dedicated to building connections among people, dedicated to making a positive difference in the world. Why? Because people matter.
I've been told that is a trite sentiment, but I've always wondered about defending the opposite perspective. Even the renowned cynic, Albert Camus, observed, "Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present."
That is our business. Giving all, giving to all, giving for all, where giving is defined as teaching, learning, inventing, creating, and yes, even evaluating. We cannot unwind the past, but the work we do with — and through — our students will write and rewrite the future. That is what education is all about. That is what expanding human potential is all about: improving the quality of life for all people. Please. Never lose sight of our common purpose.
Whether our focus be local and near or whether it be on the world as a whole, I can think of no more important mission. Take heart. Our work matters.
