A Giving Community

The deep rewards of giving go to those who give out of a concern for others, and take pains to see that their giving is wisely done, to meet real needs or seize promising opportunities.

Autumn is a time of harvest. We can't help but see the fruit of the land all around us here in Ames. Perhaps because it is so close to harvest time, October is also a month long associated with giving. It is a sharing time. It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month (notice the pink light bulbs in the dean's office) and our local public broadcasting station is soliciting too.

I want to draw your attention to two locally important fund raising campaigns underway. You have probably heard from Cheryl Lindholm and Phyllis Kendall about the United Way campaign already. This is an extremely important community effort dedicated entirely to serving those in need within our community. I know some of you are skeptical about the history and decisions made by the United Way organization. I can assure you, however, that local decisions are made regarding our local donations and these are distributed locally without discrimination based on race, creed, gender, orientation, age, or any other categorical factor. You decide where your donation is directed, but please note that 100% of the organizations on the list have signed a pledge of nondiscrimination.

Another important campaign underway is Habitat for Humanity. One of the best experiences I've ever had was helping to build a home for Habitat for Humanity, but financial resources are needed too. Any assistance you feel you can afford would be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

In sum, a community is defined by its members caring for one another. None should be too proud in a community either to ask for—or receive—help. I hope you participate as best you can.

Thank you,

Cheryl
